Our Story
The Idea Takes Flight (1980)
Del Smith, a float-plane pilot for the Tahsis Company, noticed mill workers needed better access to lumber and supplies. Between flights, he pitched the idea to company leaders, literally in mid-air, and they approved it. Tahsis Building Center was born.
Building the First Store
Del and Silvia Smith constructed a two-storey building: their family home upstairs, the hardware store and ambulance station downstairs. Two commercial lots were added for storing lumber and dry goods like plywood and cement.
A Growing Mill Town
With two major mills operating, business thrived. Del even bought a crane truck to sell cedar out of town. Tahsis was booming, and the store grew alongside it.
A New Family Takes the Helm (1984)
Friends Tony and Judy Ellis, looking for a long-term future in Tahsis, purchased the store. They renamed it Tahsis Building Supply and continued serving the community as the town climbed to a population of about 1,800.
Mill Closures and Big Changes (2000–2003)
When the local mill was purchased and shut down, the town’s population plummeted. Many families moved away, but Tony and Judy stayed, believing the store still had purpose as new residents and seasonal visitors discovered Tahsis.
Keeping the Community Supplied
Tony became principal at Captain Meares School while Judy ran the store, including regular F350 supply runs to Campbell River. With the mill gone, every piece of lumber now had to be sourced from outside the village.
A Legacy of Service
With longtime team members Gord Van Ek and Allison Stiglitz helping for more than 15 years, Tony and Judy kept the store strong until June 2025, when they passed the business on to the next generation.
A New Chapter
In June 2025, we proudly took over the business with immense gratitude for the foundation built and the loyal support of our customers. As we move forward, we’re excited to continue the traditions that make this store special, while bringing fresh energy and new ideas to serve Tahsis even better.
